FLEXIBED® and fle-X-ibloc
The revolutionary Flexibed nterface system (Bedding) linking together barrelled actions and stocks of the competition rifles was invented by the New Zealanders John Hastie and Tony Halberg. Originally conceived for the Gruenig-Elmiger rifles their company, H&H Enterprises of Hastings (NZ) imported at the time.
As H&H Enterprises were planning to manufacture their own action, they contacted Robert Chombart, who immediately realised all the advantages and potentials of the system and adapted the Millenium, that H&H asked him to design and were to manufacture to suit the Flexibed.
Initially, the Flexibed used an aluminium alloy Bedding Block comprising a lenghtwise Vee, on the sides of which were inserted two long strips of Neoprene hard elastomere, on which bears the action over its whole length . The Bedding Screws pass through neoprene bushings. Pressure on the bushings is limited by a steel sleeve, to just ensure the right intended neoprene bushings compression, perfectly maintaining the action bearing on the strips. Recoil is progressively absorbed by the radial compression capacity of the elastomere bushings.
The Bedding Block being then inletted and glued in a composite or wooden stock, but a light metal stock with the system integrated became quickly available from H&H.
T he system allowed:
---A perfect interchange ability Action/Stock, and vice-versa. Several barrelled actions on the same stock for several disciplines for instance.
--Unequalled shooting comfort by the action of the elastomere bushings dampening recoil ,vibrations and harmonics.
--Complete insensibility to atmospheric conditions, notably rain. The rifle keeping its accuracy in all circumstances.
The Flexibed system, associated to the ‘Mille" have nothing more to prove in terms of accuracy, having, despite their relative restricted spread, always obtained the most enviable places in all the international Fullbore shooting competitions in all disciplines, up to the prestigious Commpnwealth Games and the Queen’s Prize in the 2008 Bisley Impeiral Meeting, won shooting a Millenium stocked on a Flexibed light metal stock..
Recently, Robert Chombart redesigned the Flexibed system, not only to adapt it to the new INCH action, but also for other models of compatible actions, in particular the Barnard P and now in development for the C.G Delta 59 single shot, also suitable for the Rem 700 and clones. A model for the Savage has also been developed with the Fred Herve"s collaboration.
He re-named it ‘fle-X-ibloc", also in reference to the automotive-style Elastic Bushes he is using.
The modification consists particularly in the use of standard readily available elements, Elastic Bushes ‘Paulstra Flexiblocs’ and neoprene 70 and 90 Shore round strips. All the original system qualities are kept, and even improved…and the cost sensibly reduced.
